Influence of Socioeconomic Status on the Choice of Esthetic Restoration

Abstract

Background: Smile plays a vital role in facial esthetics. It is considered to be the second most important facial feature with regard to attractiveness. Nowadays, there is a rise in the number of patients seeking esthetic treatments in enhancing the smile. The aim of this study is to evaluate the choice of aesthetic restoration among the different socioeconomic groups.


Materials and methods: This was a retrospective study where all the data of the patients who reported to the department of Aesthetic dentistry in a single institution was obtained from the dental information archiving software (DIAS). Patient record was collected between March 2020 and March 2021. Data was collected and tabulated. The collected data was further analysed, recorded in Microsoft Excel software and was subjected to statistical analysis using IBM SPSS statistics analyser v.23.0


Results: the total sample size of the study was 744  patients. In this study the data was analysed for the choice of aesthetic restoration in different groups of socioeconomic status. From the study, it was observed that Indirect Veneers as a choice of aesthetic restoration was more common in the upper class and upper middle class groups, while the lower middle, Upper lower and lower class groups chose direct veneers (Ceramic) as the choice of the aesthetic restoration (statistically significant, p<0.05)


Conclusion: Within the limits of the study it was observed that the esthetic dental treatments were more preferred among the 19-25 years age groups males of the upper tiers of the socioeconomic groups.
